Dr Young is a psychiatrist currently working in private and medicolegal practice in Sydney. He has held clinical and administrative positions in public mental health services in Sydney and rural NSW since 1997, including most recently until 2019 as Acting Clinical Director South East Sydney Local Health District Mental Health Services.
From 2011 to 2014 was the Medical Director of Mental Health Services for immigration detention facilities across Australia, and in Nauru and Manus Island. Dr Young has given evidence to the 2014 Australian Human Rights Commission Inquiry into Children in Immigration Detention and Australian Senate Committee Hearings on the administration of Off-Shore Detention and Regional Processing Centres funded by Australia, has presented results from mental health screenings of detaining asylum seekers at conferences, published several papers, and has contributed to discussion on this issue in public forums and in the media.
Dr Young is a SIRA accredited assessor of permanent impairment and is appointed to the NSW Personal Injury Commission. He also performs work for the NSW Medical Council and is appointed as an occasional member of the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal.
